To think that as an outsider to a field you are qualified to discover 'gems' (and between the lines here is a bit of an assumption that one is more qualified than researchers in the field, who are of course trying to discover 'gems') seems misguided.

This post is very confusing. It is an amazing utility for engineering (to say nothing of other applications - it gave me a great recipe for dinner the other night, too)

My company is hiring, my inbox is slammed with companies hiring. And this is for product engineering and leadership.

The market is cold for juniors, and unclear when/how that’s changing.

Edit for context, but this is in silicon valley. Never relocated during the pandemic - always suspected this might end up being the case.

You're toast.

This article is framed incorrectly. The author is focused around productivity or 'wasted' time. Rather, it should be about ensuring that the things you fill your time with bring you joy.

A lot of people fill their idle time gazing at social media, and this activity isn't making them happier. That makes it a waste of time. To the extent they're playing games or enjoying themselves, and are otherwise managing their life - there is no problem. There are no years to add to your life.

Life is not a formula to min max, at least imo

Are these things 'growing up'? I don't really see them happening in the ways you're describing.

At the tech giants, RTO is quite common, but I also see the creation of countless new companies that were birthed in the pandemic and have healthy remote cultures that benefit from hiring flexibly.

With respect to DEI, it's more at the forefront than ever. It's easier to hire now than it was a decade ago given the layoffs, meaning it's even easier to assess many qualified applicants and validate that you're bringing on fresh, healthy perspectives to your team.

The AI thing I'll concede though. That's been a lot of fun and I do agree is happening across the board.
