I think googles been putting more of their money into super long context stuff, not powerful coding stuff. they've got 10million token windows for some internal stuff (Gemini 1.5 Pro Test), more research says meta is also in on the long context game (Llama 4 Scout)

their putting a ton of money into things that will benefit AI work if they work, but chipmaking is important for other reasons too, so if AI (somehow? I doubt) doesn't give enough ROI chips can be used for other things

While the people in power yesterday/today might not abuse databases of their entire population's DNA, those of today/tomorrow might. In the long-run, of 10y,20y, 50+y, you cannot guarantee this information will not be used for extreme harm. This is different that vaccines. Not everyone can be vaccinated, so to ensure that everyone is protected, everyone must be vaccinated. DNA sequencing at most only helps the person and at most their offspring. It should be a choice, and not mandatory.

Do you think it would be fair to have the children of billionares to be much much more intelligent than normal people, let along the children of poor people? I'm not sure what the answer is, but its very worth thinking about. If you could grow an Einstein in a lab, imagine if all the Einsteins that were grown ended up being biased to Musk-adjacent worldviews.

This is really not simple

There's definitely a sane debate needed on this. I think there's a lot of things here people wouldn't be against, but at the same time more thought needs to be put into this. Like what if you could GMO your kids to be smarter, but it costs a lot. Should this be illegal, or should the govt pay for it for poorer people, and it just gets better and better.

I doubt that there'll be a sane debate about this and I would love to be proven wrong.

interestingly in areas with higher average wealth there should be a sharper difference between the richest and poorest people in that area. consider Elon musk, and the ratio between him and the 2ed and 3ed up to the 10th richest people on earth.

be careful what you wish for. eventually we'll have a 'New San Francisco' and a 'New New York City'. Imagine the acronyms for these, NSF and NNYC. what if we just agreed to stop having kids and replace all the missing jobs with AI? then we could avoid these disastrous city names

As I see it, LLMs will/do develop 'introspectiveness' if it is selected for during RL. If its not delibrativly selected for (this is probably done because it helps with alignment; if the machine can align itself that's great) its probably a generally useful skill to have when doing normal tasks, https://www.anthropic.com/research/introspection

this feels like a small question, the money needed for this isn't that much (probably ~20b) and every country needs cyberwarfare abilities, especially automatable ones, so the military can pay for it. And its not like 10T models cant be used for anything else, so people who want ROI in health, chip development, all sorts of stuff
