Sort of. Living off-grid doesn’t necessarily mean fully abandoning society, but rejecting the part that values convenience over self-reliance. You can do this while still participating and improving society as a whole.
Granted, living full time in a sailboat is a little more extreme than a homestead with a few solar panels and crops, but even then I think it’s hard to argue that 100r have fully withdrawn from society

Labour value. Not in the past, but the argument is that it is being threatened.

In the interest of steel-manning, I think it’s not about a cure being kept secret but rather non-elites being stripped of the leverage they would need to access it.

The skill floor has definitely been lowered, but if this were actually true then firms would be replacing senior software positions with entry level ones, not the other way around.

It’s the standard enshittification playbook. Get a large market share with a good product, then you can safely degrade it since your users are too reliant on the ecosystem to conveniently switch.

I’m not so sure the usefulness of custom allocators really relates to the complexity of the problem. Take the scratch arena example: ifaik it’s just free performance (& simplicity) whenever you need dynamic allocations with lifetimes that begin and end on a critical path. Presumably this is why Jai/Odin focus on this situation so much since it applies to per-frame stuff in videogames, but generally I’d expect this to come up more often in nontrivial problems.

I feel quite bad for her. If you aren’t in the know (chronically online), I don’t think it’s obvious whatsoever that using AI for a poster could be seen as unethical. I doubt she even expected anyone to point it out.
At the same time though, even if time or budget is tight enough that you’d want to use AI, I’m not sure why you wouldn’t still use real photos for the menu items. This style that the AI apparently defaults to is kinda somewhat passable-ish, until you get to the food items which often look like they would inflict you with several status effects.

> You look very odd and silly if you still want to engage with it and just use a different UI layer (i.e., "XCancel", "Nitter".)
Why? The site still hosts plenty of content worth seeing. Is it really so silly to do it via a better UI, or to not want an account?

> Why should you put in effort to something that should be effortless?
Why should it be effortless?
> Why should I waste my time writing some inferior copy by hand?
Have some faith in yourself :)
If the LLM writing was superior then surely nobody would’ve noticed?
And to the question: because lack of care in one area implies that that the same approach might extend to other areas. Nobody’s forcing you, but it definitely sends a particular message.
> Humans produce code which is fairly ‘locally optimal’
I’m taking this to mean you find the phrasing vague. LLMs are good at avoiding the sort of fine-grained security bugs that you see in some human written code.
> Also, interesting you use ‘ as a quote rather than '. I notice these quotes are used with LLM generated text, as I can't find this on my keyboard.
Funny, but FYI a fair few mobile keyboards use non-ascii punctuation

> This person doesn't owe you any work. He's providing a product for free
A product being free doesn’t make it exempt from criticism. It’s not about “owing” anybody work.
> and this is a reasonable enough description of the product.
It’s not a great idea to signal a lack of effort, nor is it wrong for users to pick up on that signal. This is the post-llm equivalent to spelling or grammatical errors.
> I'm pretty sure at this point hand-crafted code is more likely to contain security bugs.
LLMs produce code which is fairly ‘locally optimal’, so in good hands they can absolutely be used to build correct software. They also allow those with little to no experience* to cobble something together very quickly and easily while creating a ton of security holes. I think you might be underestimating how common the latter is.
* not to suggest this applies to the OP necessarily. Rather some extra wariness is necessary nowadays since the floor has been lowered so much.

> Nothing is ideal
Right, which is why touting oversimplified economic models is likely to be contentious ;)
Speaking of which:
> The more free market a country is, the more prosperous it is.
When do you think the US was at its most prosperous? Most would say somewhere in the mid 20th century, which was hardly the least regulated time in its history…

That’s an ideal free market, but do you know of any large economies that actually meet this criteria? Happy customers are optional when you have regulatory capture.
