There's technical podcasts that are guides? When listening to something like The Changelog, it's just a conversation about a technology and its origins.

Not married but live with my partner for almost 3 years. I listen to podcasts with headphones on at work especially when doing chores. No complaints, though I'm also not doing it 24/7. I've never thought of podcasts as something to do with someone else . Guess it depends on your relationship?

Italy is probably the worst European example of this. For most of history the country was split into nation states that warred with each other. Even after unification, there's a strong cultural divide between the north and the south.

I’m sure Spotify is better than AM with discovery, but I never used that feature of Spotify. Being able to upload my own files to Apple Music (got a lot of music not in streaming services) and play it anywhere is a killer feature for me.

A few months ago we had a story here in HN claiming that parents spend more time with their kids now, or at least want to spend more time with them. Not to mention nowadays both parents take care of the kids - a few decades ago outside of dinner and going out on the weekend fathers didn't do much else. Maybe that's why you feel this way.
I have friends whose parents switched careers by studying or working late, and I know some junior developers who are parents who taught themselves to code. So obviously just because you have kids doesn't mean you can't do anything else with your free time. You just have to make choices with your time management, I guess. But I don't know, I don't have kids :-)

I’m not sure why tech workers think they’re special. Almost everyone that moves to NYC for a good office job goes through this. Moving to a suburb or another city after age 35 is a stereotype. So is staying here and enjoying a DINK or single life (unless you have a lot of money!).
Job-wise, the NYC tech market is as good as ever.

In-App makes sense. I’ve recently purchased a good amount of not-free apps but the only in-app stuff I’ve purchased has been “pro” versions of free apps I’ve downloaded. I’m guessing the former don’t count.

Yeah sure I just meant they aren't just saying it's awesome and not actually use it. I don't know about ATP but a lot of the apps that sponsor Mac Power Users are apps the hosts used before sponsorship was even considered, so I trust them a bit more.

I only pay $48 a year for 1Password, but even if it was $60 it doesn't bother me. If that means thousand of dollars by the time I die, it's fine. I like the service.
$4,000 over 40-60 years is insignificant. If it's useful and doesn't mess with your monthly budget, why not keep paying?
Not trying to change your mind, but I don't see the problem, and you could say that about anything you pay monthly for.

Companies do stuff like that because they think or have proved that it sells. I've heard and read that people increasingly don't want just products any more. They want a brand, a story, etc. That might not work for beer or TVs but that won't stop Budweiser and Sony from trying.

Unless the film is animated, I could not see how you could enjoy watching it at 1.5x speed, particularly if it's a serious drama.
Humans moving at 1.5x speed just looks weird, and when I speed narrative (i.e. not documentaries) films, it feels like I am watching them just to feel like I watched it compared to enjoying it.

I was not brought up in America so I didn't grow up with the Protestant Work Ethic as part of my culture, so this question is hard for me to answer. Honestly, anything else?
Nothing wrong with focusing on work, especially if you're an entrepreneur or very ambitious. I respect that.
But I think most of us are just putting our eight hours in and then doing other stuff, and that's okay too. The problem I see in the US is that the latter group of people is subconsciously guilty about this and thus spends their free time reading about how to be better at work. It's yet another manifestation if the "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" culture.
How about reading or learning about something that has nothing to do with your day to day job that you find interesting?

Worse - I've noticed that most of HN likes to read productivity and self help books. Nothing wrong with that, but it means people are spending a majority of their leisure time learning how to work better!
