The problem is most software engineers are disconnected from why their work even matters. It's hard to be motivated when you can't see the impact your work has on others and you don't get any recognition for it.

I think it comes down to ownership. Going forward it will be more important for engineers to show more product ownership of their domain. Product thinking is becoming more important.

That doesn't mean you are a salesperson. It means you are more connected to the users and their problems.

Just because you have a degree or think you are a software developer, it doesn't mean you are any good at it and should be hired. Companies are substantially better off having fewer developers than having bad ones.

Bad developers take a lot of time to train, manage, QA their work, fix their work, fix their work again, and then finally someone else just does it. They are in fact a net NEGATIVE impact on the team. You are actually better off without them. They actually slow you down instead of improving productivity.

It's akin to hiring a cook who screws up every meal they make. Not only did I pay them to do so, now I have to pay others cleanup their mess.

It appears that this hack was done by first hacking their build server. During their build process the extra malicious code was slipped in to the binaries.

How does one detect and prevent these types of processes?

How do we prevent as a community what happened to Solarwinds from happening to us?
