Good catch - I should have expanded on the acronym, especially as was referring to my hearing loss being Single Sided Hearing Loss, so already easy to confuse (Although as you point out, SSHL often presents as single sided deafness). In my case, I had sudden loss of balance with subsequent hearing loss. I spent well over six weeks suffering from bouts of severe rotational vertigo, which once passed, never returned, but took a hefty chunk of my left side hearing with it.
The hearing aid has certainly given me back most of what I loss, but it took some time to come to terms with losing my hearing on that side.

I've got moderate to severe SSHL and use an Oticon intent 1 miniRite. For my use it's been very good - long last battery, relatively robust. It also has excellent bluetooth connectivity, so I often use it to stream audiobooks in tedious meetings.
In terms of hearing quality, for me, it's been solid, with the caveat that it took a while to get the fitting right. I think my audiologist was a bit old school, and was sticking to settings he'd known to be good in the past rather than fitting for what the aid is capable of. I've recently had its prescription type updated to the native Oticon one, and it's been a revelation in terms of clarity.
My hearing loss is relatively recent (About four years now) so I will caveat this that I've only used Oticons, so can't really compare to anything else.

That's one of my enduring memories of VMS, and something that came as a shock when I came to different OS - the lack of clustering. We had (As far as I remember) two vast servers called Alpha and Beta (With Gamma as a dev server). They were the size of a full-size rack for a single server. But from a developer perspective, my processes would run seamlessly across both of them and see a single FS, a single set of processors and RAM.
That and developing in Vista4GL. I'd kill to get hold of some manuals for that to remind myself what my first professional language was like.

I'm genuinely looking forward to this. I used VMS back in the 90's and loved it as an OS. Clustering, versioned file systems, reasonably well formed error messages; it seemed very civilised.
It'd be nice to be able to run it in a VM and see how much I've forgotten. I've got an old workstation in my loft, but haven't really got the room to have it setup.

Completely this. I'm currently working on a novel with a view to publishing, but under no illusions that it's going to make any worthwhile money. For that, I have my day job and technical books (Which as far as I can make out are far more profitable then novels on average).
The Society of Authors (https://societyofauthors.org/) do some excellent work on this front. Basically, to make money writing you have to either be a _machine_ and put out a lot of content, or get lucky and build a fan base that is willing to wait for infrequent releases but buy all the copies.

I heartily recommend trying one. I ride a ZeroSR and it's just a different experience, riding sedately along country lanes allows you to appreciate things in a whole new way. It takes some getting used to though, first few times I stopped it was eerie being able to hear nothing but the traffic next to me rather then the bike itself.

Me and you both. OpenVMS got so much right back in the day. Good error conventions, versioned file system...
Why not? I was programming on a Commodore Plus/4 at the age of five. I got my teeth into this industry by hand typing from magazine articles programs that done nothing more then making the sound of bird tweets, but it taught me A: the basics of how a programming language works, and B: how to debug to get around the inevitable typo in the magazine.

Interestingly, I used to work for a company that worked with the London Black cab manufacture to developer ride-hailing from a mobile phone. This was back in the early 00's. I always wondered if there was any patent portfolio that is relevant to Lyft/Uber. It was called Zingo, sadly the only reference I could dig out from a cursory Google was a story about it going bust: https://www.theguardian.com/business/2004/nov/25/transportin...

I don't believe so. Alarms etc are (I suspect) stored locally, but to enact a change on the device I believe it has to send it upstream via the phone app and the device then retrieves the changes.
So when the service is shut down my expectation is that I won't be able to change any of my device settings. Not to mention that the room data and sleep data will be unavailable.

This is a bit of a blow - I love my sense, both for the insights into my sleep pattern, but also for the alarm. It's also nicely designed and unobtrusive on my bedside table.
I'm with you on hoping that they open it up to allow for a private server. If that happened then I'd be tempted to write a new iPhone app for it, it won't be long before the existing app will need updating to work with new iOS versions (Although it seems to work fine with 11). That being said, I'm not incredibly optimistic of a release of either a rooted firmware or protocol spec. It's a shame, it had real potential, it makes me wonder if it failed due to poor marketing or just too shallow a customer pool for this sort of device.

I'd say the big difference here is running costs. I've worked with automotive clients (Ford, GM, Renault etc) for a while, and that's a big factor for them, especially in the lease market. Also given that a car is not a 'throw it away and hand the customer a reconditioned unit' item, repairs become far more expensive and time critical.
The sheer drag of maintaining a network of repairers, keeping them stocked with (Sometimes huge) spare parts, managing repair times etc is astonishing. I can see why Google and Apple would want to lean on established players instead of going it alone.

I spend a lot of time picking up existing and 'legacy' platforms, and it consistently seems to impress my clients when I'm able to implement automation, even on so called 'un-automatable' platforms.
I also think it's the ability to understand that the business and the technical elements may not always work in lockstep, and being able to translate the needs of one to the other.

Writing. I love writing, I've published a couple of technical manuals and I'm currently submitting to various short story anthologies whilst working on another (Self published) manual. Writing leaves me happy and fulfilled and generally free of stress.
Trouble is, it does not pay the bills. I'm currently working very hard to pay off all my debt and once that's done I'll be taking up writing full time and leaving the tech industry behind.
