Reference-dependent effort ("bunching" around a target) [1] is probably the closest thing. The existing high score was acting as everyone's reference point. Anchoring [2] is the more general cognitive version.

Great way of putting this. I certainly feel like this in smaller companies where each action (or inaction) has a direct consequence on the profitability.

The bigger question for me is how to use this efficiently as a team of engineers. Most workflow tools i've seen so far focus on making a single engineer get more out of a claude/codex subscription but not much how teams as a whole can become more productive.

Any ideas?

What’s the cost of a kWh in Maine?

The newer houses here in Japan tend to be all-electric (water, stove, AC) and the current prices (~¥40/kWh) make a lot wish for kerosene heaters of the past decades.

Not trying to defend them but I often see these sentences when Japanese is translated too verbatim. 「申し訳ございませんが…出来ません。」is a very formal way of saying this. Context then of course tells the receiver if they really can’t or just don’t want to ..

I think this is a case where the Free Monad could help a lot. I've only ever built toy-examples but I really liked the way it allows you to structure the program's plan separately from interpreting it. A dry-run mode could be implemented as a side-effect free interpreter .. without ever having to touch the plan or the program's grammar.

Exactly what I came here to say.

The error messages produced by g++ for anything template related are a really difficult hurdle to overcome as a beginner. I am sure once you mastered it, it does make sense -- but right now it's a source of frustration for me.
