The more the US shows that it is an enemy to Europe the better.

I hope the leaders on this side of the pond grow cojones and start to treat the US and its companies as a threat to EU and the countries within.

When I play something new, it is typically either indies or games from smaller studios that still can put out something fun.

In the vast majority of jobs however, being technically competent only matters to give you a chance of getting the job. Being more technically competent increases your odds.

But what will be the defining factor is the evaluation if "Can I like (or at least tolerate) communicating with this person on a daily basis?"

Even at companies where you have multiple rounds of leet code, there will be a couple of behavioural interviews in the mix. Those are definitely not fluff.

I got into it about a year ago. Bought a refurbished old Dell mini PC for 300 bucks and turned it into a home server. Debian + several docker containers.

I don't know if this is the future, but it feels disruptive. I think it is amazing that I can run my private home streaming service alongside a bunch of other cool things on old hardware and the experience is in many ways superior to actual services that I am charged to use.

I don't do it because I don't care; I do it because it is super satisfying when it has been boringly running for weeks without me doing anything to keep it up beyond paying the electricity bill, upgrades are extremely predictable, etc.

I manage my home server with a script that presumes the service is running on a compose stack. So I can run stuff like `stack freshrss restart`. I don't want to touch my scripts, I just add the compose file to some expected path and the script finds it based on naming conventions.

No shit. This is essentially my point.

I don't care what companies will or will not exist on each model; What I care about is the sort of incentive each model creates.

In a model where investors give loans to nascent companies as a mean for those to have needed capital, the incentives are there for a company to make sense, grow organically, and chase profitability. In other words, the incentive is there for companies to be economically viable.

The model you defend creates an incentive for destructive growth. Investing in exchange of equity only makes sense to reach the exit event, no matter how ruinous things are as a result. It's a model that creates this shitty hustle-culture grift-economic. I will have trouble to express politely how much I think it makes the world a shittier place.

As I said, I indirectly benefitted from it, but I recognize that this model sort of sucks.

So, it doesn't really matter if I would have loaned money to those ventures (in a scenario where I am someone in the position of loaning money). But for the sake of entertaining you, I'll reply:

- NVidia: Maybe. The hardware business is cutthroat, but I think a company can be sustainable producing computer hardware.

- Dropbox: Probably not. Neat idea, but easy to copy by larger players or other upstarts.

- Diffusion LLMs: No. Too experimental, and I likely would not have seen potential for it early on.

I come out of this that Anthropic actually ripped off Mononoke, but did so in a joyful and inspired manner. Maybe the prompt to Claude has a trailing smiling emoji.

More importantly, how does my vague notion of the ideas are good or bad tie back to my original point that investors willing to loan instead of taking ownership is perhaps more sane?

For years I ran on Mint, and I still adore it. But on my daily driver I switched to OpenSUSE Tumbleweed and I am really enjoying it so far.
