There has been a growing trend over the past couple of decades to outsource more and more game development to cheaper parts of the world, trending towards keeping only a small core team in the home country, supported by for-hire remote developers in Eastern Europe and Asia.

The other big advantage to work for hire is not needing to keep a large team of specialists employed throughout development, when they may not be required for all of that time. Keeping everyone fully utilised has always been one of the big challenges for game studios.

Ironically, AI may actually reduce the amount of outsourcing that a core team needs to do (though a lot of it is content and AI is still pretty bad at generating content).

Even if there were a UK referendum where a clear majority voted to rejoin the EU as a member state, not at the top table, our return to the EU depends on the EU accepting our application. We burned a lot of bridges on exit that we need to rebuild.

And also the favourite party to win in the next election is spearheaded by the very people who orchestrated Brexit. The EU will not be receptive while it seems that a majority of people are still voting for an anti-EU party.

The sensible course for rejoining is to work towards Schengen or similar, while acting as a partner state in good faith for a decade or two.

Also worth pointing out that the hard Brexit we got, where we left Schengen and abandoned much of our cross-European programmes, was almost unthinkable, and not seriously considered by the media. Whenever it was brought up, it was decried as “project fear” by those who pushed for it.

The problem is that they need full power 24/365.

If you don’t have enough upward velocity to escape earths gravity, hitting the ground is also inevitable.

This can happen if they feel it’s easier or harder then expected.

The developers in the article are taking about seeking upfront publisher funding for a small studio to develop the game with a much shorter time horizon. The publisher would likely need to invest much more, but would take a much greater percentage of revenue, and with an established franchise like Myst and a team of veteran devs the risk is - in theory - lower.

If a publisher wants to fund something cheap and niche, maybe a bit of a gamble, it’s too much.

If they want to fund a more fleshed-out title that is likely to succeed with a bit of marketing spend behind it, it’s almost too little.

So I think they might be right, they’re in a weird space that publishers don’t want to look at right now.
