my mistake. i thought virginia also had local county income tax. in that case virginia is lower and ill update my post.
maryland has local county tax which for montgomery county adds up with the state income tax to be several thousand higher per year than DC, for me.

I live in NW DC now and spent several years on the MD side about 500m from the DC border. I love it here. I am absolutely uninterested in politics and have no desire to work in defense and there is still so much to do around here, both recreation and career wise.
Another comment was suggesting not moving into DC proper an I highly disagree. being close proximity to the metro line is what enables alot of the fun parts of living in the city. also taxes are less than maryland, but higher than virginia.
job wise, there are a handful of startups as well as tons of local companies (cap 1, appian), as well as branches of larger companies (google, microsoft, amazon, every consulting company you can think of) with offices in and around DC. with the advent of remote work I think the case for moving to dc is even stronger because even if companies are located in northern virginia, you dont have to slog through some of the worst traffic in the country and can just go in occasionally - which is what i do and honestly love it.
I wish i knew more start ups but when i was job searching recently i was looking at remote roles and most of the startups i looked at were non local. also, because of the high concentration of tech jobs, there are a few local recruiting companies that know the area really well and have placed me in 2 of my last 3 jobs.
let me know if you have more questions!

i live in DC and their HQ2 in arlington VA dominates my linkedin suggested roles. they still have hundreds or even thousands of unfilled roles. i remember hearing originally they were hiring like 5000 engineers across both HQs.
surprising that they would straight up freeze hiring, unless this is maybe just freezing of junior roles or something. I want to see more details about this

i work remote but live in the northern dc area. i occasionally have to head up to the harpers ferry area after work (northwest of DC by about 60-70 min without traffic, for non locals) and the afternoon rush hour literally starts by 3pm, especially on thursdays the days i usually have to go up there.
its funny cuz so many people think "oh ill leave early and beat traffic" that you are often better off waiting until like 6pm.
i still cant believe how many WV plates i see on 270 on any given work day. i hope i never end up in a commute like that

i've been driving manual for the last seven years pretty much exclusively and i used to think that, but ive certainly found myself in all sorts of unsafe driving predicaments where i end up revving out the car, shifting with my left hand, shifting with food in my hand, etc.
In the last few years ive made a point to reduce distractions while driving and no longer do this stuff, but the point being, once you get used to manual - you find a way to be dangerous driving it haha

normal cycling shoes have a cleat you lock into the pedal with that allow very little movement. sometimes just a few mm of position change is all it takes to relieve a nagging ache and im guessing he found it easier to get comfortable with a shoe he can move around on the pedal.
I've stopped mid ride to adjust my cleats just a smidge when i was feeling discomfort. you don't want to mess around with knee pain especially when riding 12 hours a day

cool anecdote about the team sessions. I have done a few team races and they are a ton of fun with friends. my one gripe with sessions is that its very... permanent. like if you join with the wrong car or wrong team, you cant back out and change it. any idea why it was implemented like that?
I am horrible at iracing, likely because I never practice and just decide to hop into a race occasionally, but it is a good way to spend the offseason when we cant go irl racing

The only issue with F1 in iracing is that its almost too realistic. unless you spend hours tweaking the setup and really know what you are doing, the car will be difficult to drive and significantly slower than anyone else in the F1 leagues, who have spend that time fine tuning their setups.
Oh yea and they are still difficult to drive even with a good setup. 1000 HP rear wheel drive monsters...

I was obsessed with RCT2 in elementary school.
My tastes in video games have changed over the years and I am no longer sucked into the game as I was back then, but I did have a few weeks where I played a ton of OpenRCT2 with a friend - the multiplayer feature of it is a great feature and allowed me and a buddy to have a great time goofing off building rides

I never played any of the silent hills. I played resident evil 4 and 5 years ago, and recently played resident evil 7 - which i felt had a lot more horror elements then emphasis on shooting/exploding enemies like 4 and 5 did.
I REALLY enjoyed RE7. I felt like it kept me on my toes and I played it way faster than any other single player game in recent times.
What is the best entry point and order for the silent hill series?

I am more a fan of jpop but also enjoy kpop, and I have looked into this.
Japan is the second largest music market in the world. They don't need to export their music to sustain itself and through a combination of region locked music and less focus on worldwide appeal it hasn't had the same global reach as south korea's music industry, which is smaller and relies on worldwide consumption

Judging by yesterday’s race, the real key is just having your car finish the race (said in jest but there were nine DNFs in yesterday’s Austria Grand Prix and close to having a few more with Mercedes gearbox issues).
There is a ton of cool engineering in F1.
There are plenty of opportunities already for these people. It's just hard to force yourself to go to them. This is an incredibly optimistic view, it is far too easy to become complacent and not leave your house.
Especially for young people, who for the last 16 years were basically forced to go to class and interact with peers.
I'm a new(ish) grad and I really enjoyed getting to know some of my younger coworkers, and we hangout outside the office. I would have never reached this level of friendship if we only knew each other via slack and skype calls
