This is my biggest blocker to leaving software.
Anything else that interests me, STEM or non-STEM is pointless without a PhD or a decent masters program at least. I don’t even have an undergrad degree. I was more or less willing to bite the bullet until I got laid off and had to start oissing away my savings trying to find another job I hate this time with less pay less enticing benefits in a shittier market, and it doesn’t seem like it’s possible now or in retrospect. Even if I did manage it, I’d have to lose basically the rest of my life to go all in on one thing in hopes it works out.

Tbh I wasn’t paying attention, but in retrospect the signs were obvious:
1. We were owned by a PE company. I should have been more alert if no other reason, but this.
2. Company was banking on a strategy that wasn’t working. Not to go too much into what was happening, but the company had some established legacy products that most of the customers were still using. However majority of the hiring and work being done was all-in on there new suite of software under which the whole company revolved. However they were seeing very little adoption . I worked very close to customers and what I saw was that customers just did not want the new software. I didn’t do what they wanted and was filled to the brim with buzzword-tier features and concepts that no one really cared about.
3. There were a few signs my manager mentioned to me after the layoffs, but I hadn’t been paying too much attention to. There were some sudden reorg choices that didn’t affect me too much, but more than that, there was a seemingly desperate rebrand announced some time before. It didn’t make sense to me at the time, but in the context of 2) it seems more clear. There were also a number of curious lower level executive departures in the months prior.
It was a small SaaS company and they ended up dumping around half of us in late 2022. Not sure what they’re up to now. They’ve done yet another rebrand since and little information remains regarding the old company name and endeavors.

> 2x WFO/week is actually quite comfortable for me.
Just started a new job a few months ago that was 2x WFO. Worked out fine, didn’t mind.
Of course upper management is now planning for a full RTO. While also worrying about potential retention problems lol.

> I'm looking at leaving tech.
I was planning on leaving tech before the layoff. In fact, I was hoping to use my last job to fund my education in something else, and then had to piss away my savings while out of work. I was telling people at the time that that was the last job I ever planned on working in software.
Now I’m very close to just resigning and accepting I’ll never get out.

Fine now, but I was out of work most of 2023. I was not prepared for this market.
> And if you're doing okay - what advice can you share to help those out there who may be struggling?
I hear the market isn’t doing much better. I was saved by the grace of a referral, but I’m confident remote work is dead for most reach workers. Part of the reason I was out of work so long was that remote was my one hard requirement. I was willing to take a massive salary cut for a remote role, but could never make it past the first round. For on site roles (which I honestly used for interview practice) I usually got much further. Even the job I managed to get started out hybrid, and now upper management is slowly trying to claw us back in full time, despite being warned of retention issues.
