This is the fault of manufacturers fixing supply, especially in the case of micron, one of only 3 memory chip manufacturers, deciding to flip the bird to the non-AI consumer market.

They ran fiber down the street connecting to the street my grandparents are on, but didn’t go down theirs. But of course they’ll gladly charge more for “up to” 50mbit when it’s only 25 on a good day. They’re all criminal.

Lately I’ve been noticing captchas have been increasingly difficult day by day on Firefox. Checking the box use to go through without issue, but now it’s been starting to pop up challenges with the boxes that fade after clicking. Just like your experience, chrome has no hiccups on the same machine.

I get the opposite effects on google. As an example, I tried to search for the documentation on watcom’s wasm assembler. It kept giving me results for web assembly no matter how I modified the query nor the Boolean search operators. To me it’s a symptom of search engines trying too hard to be smart and predictable.

Comcast lobbied so hard to get our local mileage for fiber expansion voted down. When it passed, they suddenly decided they’re going to spend 6 figures worth of money to expand their own fiber backdown (they’re not even to the house). Its amazing when corporations will spend more money fighting something than actually implementing said thing.

It’s not just appliances, it’s even common household items too. Someone disassembled a portable toothbrush that died within some months vs the many years of the one that died before.
The original one had what looked like a custom/in house engineered motor with a solid structure and beefy battery. The new one had those cheap toy motors that cost a few pennies each along with a flimsy frame and tiny battery to match.
