<p>But it is not a coincidence. Light — the EM field waves — propagates at causality speed because the EM field respects a particular property of the universe, the so-called gauge symmetry. That is intimately connected to the fact that the photobs has no mass.<p>Other similar particles, like the W and Z bosons, are manifestations of the weak field. Since that field breaks the symmetry, those particles have mass and move slower.<p>BTW, that symmetry breaking is the very same one that physicists talk about when we discuss the Higgs boson.</p>

<p>A small nitpick: yes, we only needed 1 LHC to confirm the existence of the Higgs boson, BUT we made sure to have two experiments (ATLAS and CMS) looking for it. As far as I know, every modern high energy physics accelerator has had two (or more) sister experiments to cross-check each others!<p>Of course, it is not a perfect analogy, since the two experiments are not replicas. They try to address the same physics cases, but they were designed, built and are operated in a completely independent way.</p>

<p>Disclaimer: I am Brazilian and a raving anti-Bolsonaro protester.<p>If we follow that line of thought, we will always end up at the following conundrum: the planet cannot support the "affluent Western" lifestyle -- think typical Bay Area HN-er -- for all 7 billion humans (as far as I remember, I don't have the sources for that).<p>Who is going to draw the golden ticket?<p>I agree that Bolsonaro is an opportunist (like many politicians), and he spews a lot of abominable statements. Unfortunately, his views align with a large section of Brazilian society. A society that was, from the beginning, built on layers upon layers of opportunism, manorialism and slavery. A society that cannot condemn its slave trade past, nor its many dictatorships.<p>Bottom line -- yes, I think you are in position to judge us.</p>

<p>Even if they cannot get <i>all</i> the data back, I suppose they could do a preliminary analysis onboard and decide what to send back.<p>It is, in a very broad sense, the same problem we have at the LHC. There is just too much data taken for the available storage and bandwidth.</p>

<p>But what does "measuring more directly anyway" mean if you're trying to measure something that may or may not exist?<p>For instance, in searches for new phenomena in high-energy physics, one usually puts an upper limit on deviations from the expectation of "known physics" (i.e., standard model). That essentially translates to statements like "if this particle exists, its mass should be higher than X TeV, or else we would have seen it already in our data". Of course, in reality, the particle probably does not exist, so you cannot really measure its mass!</p>

<p>Quantum mechanics is not based on special relativity at all. In fact, you can show that you can write Hamilton-Jacobi's equation (purely Classical Mechanics) as a limiting case of Schrodinger's equation.<p>It is true that QM came about initially as a problem with the quantization of the electromagnetic field, but that was a bit of an accident.</p>

<p>CMS physicist here! As our ATLAS colleagues, we also use boosted decision trees extensively in our analysis, as well as the so-called Matrix Element Method -- a way to combine the knowledge of the differential theoretical cross-sections for the signal and background processes with our knowledge of the experimental resolution of our detectors. More details are available in [1].<p>However, in CMS we have recently started using Deep Neural Networks. These are used for the separation of signal and background events in the "single-lepton channel" of the search, i.e., the search where the Higgs boson decays to two bottom quarks and the top quarks decay in such a way that at least one electron or muon is present in the final state.
