Cherry picked usage stats are off topic. The fact that 90% of Fortune 500 companies rely on COBOL[1] doesn’t make other languages a niche.

We’ve already lived through multiple floods of unmaintainable code, eg with unstructured JQuery.

New tech stacks will appear and they will handle the mess to some extent.

What is your stack (harness, model) and how much do you pay per month?

How would you compare your experience to a typical subsidized plan like Claude Code + Pro plan?

I’m asking because i keep hearing that open weight models are cheap and efficient - is that really the case in practice?

I’d like to code with an AI agent via a BYOK open source client. I want to be able to inspect everything, check the system prompt, etc. Also, I’d like to avoid vendor lock in.

Is anyone here using a setup like this?

Does this get close in pricing and efficiency to the subsidized plans offered by model providers (like Claude Pro, etc)?

In particular Deepseek and Kimi models are being praised as both efficient and cheap; I’m curious if anyone built a coding setup around them.

To me the context is new technology that replaces the old, but the old is still more practical in some applications.

If we don't count player pianos, punch cards originated in textile industry and jacquard looms[1] - and many jacquard loom users rely on punch cards even today.

This is unlikely. Perhaps “most code”, but not “all”.

People can overwhelmingly shift to a new technology, but the old one usually remains in use, even if niche.
