Sigh.
I'm sure the average person was completely fed up with the federal grant process for medical issues and it was a driving force in their voting decision. Excellent proof.

>100% support (10s of millions of Americans do) many of these cuts when scientists are hired because they know someone, or are part of some “group” rather than being the best choice.
Prove it. Prove this happens at a large scale. This is just nonsense talking points.

Agreed. It feels intellectually childish to say we can never have any government because of corruption. This government is flagrantly corrupt, has publicly ignored the courts, and weaponized the DOJ. This is not normal.

I find HN to be filled with reactionaries who over react to every little thing when it comes to AI. Look at the response to Fable kicking some queries down to 4.8. If you read the comments you would think this was 1984 level censorship and the end of AI as we know it. In reality, it literally was something that most people would never run up against and if you did your query was kicked to a model that was state of the art literally a day ago. It's too much sometimes.

Because this effectively hinders 0% of people. I understand why people don't like it but day to day this is nothing. If you're using it for coding, it won't stop you. The pearl clenching here and over reacting is predictable and sad. If you are working for a large organization and you were going through the vendor procurement process, questions like Can this produce pornography? Can this tell my employees how to break the law? are normal and anyone wiht half a brain knows that this is the case. Before people jump on that, I understand people have access to the internet. Your question "how businesses could trust cloud LLMs going forward" is absurd and you know it. There is an extremely small set of edge cases that effect 0% of people day to day. You can trust them just fine.

This is always the response. I'm not an idiot. I understand kids will do things to break the rules. The point is, it won't be something they have access to constantly. If they see a phone at a friend's house that's fine.
>You’ll do far better to explain how these things are harmful, and help them make decisions that are healthy.
Yes. And the healthy decision is to not have a phone. That's like saying I should let my kid eat ice cream for dinner every night but talk to them about how it's better to eat healthy. I'm a parent. It's my job to make some decisions for my children.

I'm 43 and I'm about the happiest I've been in my life. I say that not to boast, but to say that putting some sort of restriction on your life because of your age is a bad way to frame things. It's never to late to try and build something that brings you joy. I've found my people where I live. I make an effort to see people and go out. The vast majority of weekends my wife and I are at home but we make an effort to host fun parties a few times a year. I find having a fun experience like that once every couple months does wonders for my mental health. Yes, I am very tired some times. And at this age, sometimes it will take 2 or 3 days to recover from a "late" night (that term has changed dramatically as we've aged). This isn't drinking related, I just can't sleep past 6:30 am.
It makes me so sad to see people basically give up. Therapy is a great start. You only have one life. Get out there and live it!

Don't do it then. :)
It's not hard. If they need to be contacted get them a dumb phone. And yes, my kids will miss out. They will miss out on their attention span being destroyed, their ability to critically think destroyed, body issues, radicalization, horrible influences, etc... My children will miss out on all that and I'm very glad that will be the case. I'm not sure why other parents are rushing to destroy their kids brains but that's their choice.

So other people's back yards it is! What a wonderful philosophy.
As for Amazon HQ, I don't know what NY's deal was but I was in Boston when it was a consideration and the amount of tax breaks they wanted was insane and would have been a huge net loss for the city. I'm very glad it wasn't moved there. It doesn't matter if you create a few thousand jobs if you get literal billions in tax breaks, it's a net loss for the state.

I believe this is something that is no longer done. On top of that, one of the early major proponents of it has admitted it was a failure, but I forget their name. The school my kids are at are not using this system. Obviously it's a data point of one, but I don't think most schools are doing this anymore.

I don't think anyone is under the delusion that cigarettes are healthy for you. Everyone knows they cause multiple cancers. That's part of the appeal. It shows how 'tough' and 'cool' the user is.
