I guess @rrobukef means if you flip A and B repeatedly, they just swap positions and reverse orientation each time.
But if you flip A and B, then B and C, then A and C, you get B and C to swap positions without changing their orientations.

My first entry was like "Welcome to thunderrabbit's journal! Today is April 11, 1987 and I just had a fun experience that I want to remember..."
Journaling off and on since 1987, I have a few rules for myself when journaling:
1. Write the time, day of week, date, month, and year for every entry.
2. Don't worry about lapses in writing. Just write a new
entry when I can.
3. Allow my topics to be spontaneous. I sometimes have a structure I'd like to use, but allow freedom in any moment.
4. Relish mistakes, smears, stains on the paper by labeling them, e.g. "tea stain while studying with Akane" (real example!)
5. Just enjoy the process of writing.

I've also been asking long form questions, including links to my research sources (especially our internal documentation), explaining my reasons for making certain assumptions, etc.
This helps future me easily find answers to the same questions when I end up having them again, and can eventually serve as documentation when even newer people come into the company.
I've also been taking exquisite notes (online, so searchable), including the same type of long-form links so that even if I have to leave a task for a month, future me can come back to it and pick up the thread immediately.
Taking these notes does slow me down a bit in the short run but I find it is invaluable in the long run.
