Model distillation is lossy compression of big model to produce a smaller model.

Smaller model requires less space on disk, less video memory, and less compute (cheaper hardware).

Downside is that distilled model performs worse on the same benchmarks compared to original model.

Cloud connected (robot AI in cloud) home robots would be very unsafe, due to network slowdown/outages. Imagine it freezing/stopping right after it turns on water faucet or stovetop.

Humanity agreed, for example, that growing ozone hole is dangerous for everyone, and worked together to ban production of gases that damage ozone layer. See Montreal Protocol International Treaty. It was highly effective. Training powerful AIs isn’t different.
