Again, even if I agreed with your take on immigration, it’s in no way equivalent to the guy with the nuclear codes actively avoiding the constitutional framework.
Feel free to keep going on about how horrible illegal immigration is if you want. You can keep mentioning it for hours, but it still won’t actually be a real response to anything I said.

I didn't say that. I said it's not the same an elected official actively defying and trying to weaken constitutional law.
I'm not sure what kind of whataboutism gymnastics you're trying to pull.

It's weird, because when working on a big project, taking a break for a week or two, and returning to it, I will find a bug and will see hundreds of lines of code that are absolutely terrible, and I will tell myself "Tom you know better than to do this, this is a rookie mistake".
I think people forget that it's hard to be clever and tidy 100% of the time. Big programs take a lot of discipline and an understanding of the context that can be really hard to maintain. This is one of several reasons that my second draft or third draft of code is almost always considerably better than the first draft.

I’m not sure what to tell you if you don’t understand the difference between an elected official actively and purposefully defying the constitution in order to directly weaken our institutions, and people wanting our immigration laws to be less strict.

I've had wifi drivers not work with fresh installs of Windows as well, so that's hardly a unique Linux thing. I've also had to reboot Windows into special modes because apparently a driver from a Broadcom WiFi card was "unsigned", so I had to disable the check for that.
I've also had registry corruptions, and I've had unprompted updates brick my hard drive because Windows Update is a terrible piece of software, because as far as I can tell the Windows "repair tools" have never worked for any human in history, and neither has System Restore.
I've had updates in Linux break things but never so thoroughly as the time my mom got an automatic update where she literally could not boot in at all (because I think that the automatic update to Windows 11 that she did not want or ask for screwed up the boot keys).

Why does garbage collection make it unsuitable for production use? A lot of production software is written in garbage collected languages like Java. Pretty much the entire backend for iTunes/Apple Music is written in Java, and it's not doing any kind of fancy bump allocator tricks to avoid garbage. In my mind, kind of hard to argue that Apple Music is not "production use".
There are certainly plenty of projects where garbage collection is too slow, but I don't know that they're the majority, and more people would likely prefer memory safety by default.

I feel like "pain" is a strong word here. It was a book spoiler. I wasn't laughing at people being punched or hurt or anything.
I acknowledge it's a dick move, but it really is just a spoiler for a book, not exactly life ruining and really shouldn't even be day-ruining. I had the book spoiled for me too and it was just something I moved on from, somehow.

I actually liked reading and I was a nerdy kid. To be clear, I never actively participated in the spoiler stuff, just read about the reactions.
I mean, keep in mind I was fourteen when this happened, and fourteen year old boys are very often assholes and I was sadly not an exception to this.
I guess I just found it funny how much of a reaction people had with it. I liked the Harry Potter books too, I was reading them like every other fourteen year old was, and the plot being spoiled for me didn't really bother me very much, cuz, you know, it's just a book. Some people really got upset.
Again, definitely a dick move to do that, and a dick move for me to find it amusing. Kids are douchebags.

Reminds me of the Snape Kills Dumbledore spoiler initiative that happened in 2005, where people would drive around bookstores with people yelling in line and spoiling it.
Admittedly, kind of a dick move, but I have to admit I did find it kind of funny at the time.
https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/snape-kills-dumbledore

Like most Microsoft products, Windows is a tool that benefits mostly from aggressive early marketing and successfully convincing everyone that they need this product, and by the time everyone realizes how terrible the product is it's too late because everything already depends on it.
They have done this everywhere; Microsoft Office is everywhere and terrible. Sharepoint used to be everywhere and is terrible. I know they bought it, but LinkedIn is nearly required everywhere and terrible. Teams seems to be increasingly used everywhere and terrible. And of course Windows is everywhere and terrible.
As far as I can tell, there is not a single thing that Microsoft does not half-ass. They're not a software company, they're a marketing company that sells software.

Thank you for saying something I've been saying for awhile: Linux definitely has jank, but I'm not convinced it's more janky than Windows.
I think people are so used to Windows' awfulness that they kind of forget about how much bullshit is associated with it. Linux has bullshit too, though it's getting better, but when people talk about Linux jank they're always smuggling in an implication of Windows having less jank, which I don't concede at all.

Oh I don’t think it’s ethically wrong in the slightest. If you own the DVD you have given the copyright holder due compensation; I think it’s ethically fine to make a backup of media that you legally purchased.
I was just saying that I don’t think it’s actually legal to do so for a DVD since those usually have CSS encryption.

> if you have the DVD its legal to make a backup digital copy.
Is this actually true? I thought there was inherent illegality to cracking the DRM on DVDs.
Granted, I doubt anyone is going to come after you for making a backup of a legitimate copy, but I think strictly speaking it's still illegal.
I am also not a lawyer.

I think legislation like this is much more about making sure that they're never even considered by the big AI companies. OpenAI and Anthropic, when looking to build a new center, will see that there would be headaches trying to get a datacenter built, so they instead just focus on one of the other 49 states.

This certainly seems less awful than the typical C building process.
What I've been doing to manage dependencies in a way that doesn't depress me much has been Nix flakes, which allows me a pretty straightforward `nix build` with the correct dependencies built in.
I'm just a bit curious though; a lot of C libraries are system-wide, and usually require the system package manager (e.g. libsdl2-dev) does this have an elegant way to handle those?

Tangential, but I read his New Kind of Science book. It's an interesting book, but I found the first chapter to be pretty amusing.
The first chapter is so completely self-aggrandizing about how this book will change your life and the world and the entirety of science and mathematics and you should feel lucky for reading it.
The cellular automata stuff is pretty cool, but I don't feel like it lived up to the hype of the first chapter.
