I use Meridian standalone active speakers which just take a PCM stream. An HDFury Vertex2 can strip the audio from HDMI

Interesting. If you need to support occasional writes, you could have a large static search tree and a small writable tree that you check afterwards. The when you have enough changes, you could occasionally ship those changes into a new version of the static tree
