I think they were buying carbon offsets at some point and trying to validate that the countries and organizations that were selling the carbon offset were not cutting down those trees, effectively profiting twice.

I agree with you. One counterargument is that producing software was never a path to adoption unless you had distribution and the big companies (OpenAI, Anthropic) have distribution on a scale that individuals will not.

I know this isn't federal jurisdiction but ever since reading the executive order issued yesterday and the quite vague description of what is Antifa I wonder if this type of interference/obstruction of law will start to be prosecuted.

Since the money has already been invested they probably don’t care who succeeds/fails but they want the unicorn to give returns ASAP so they can be spent before they die.

There is also cost cutting. I personally experienced very high hosting bills unexpectedly and then spent a month changing my infrastructure to run for almost free again. I personally prefer these optimization challenges over borrowing money. Self-reliance is important for some people.

How does a low interest rate affect investment? In the end you still need to return the principle so is the idea that it just offers you smaller loan payments (ie. More time for your investment to succeed)?

Think about the timescale that lithium has been a valuable resource. When the first oil wells were being drilled in Pennsylvania for lamp oil no one could fathom how oil exploration, extraction and processing techniques would evolve to mechanize an entire planet.

I’ve searched for my domain on Facebook and LinkedIn and if the group or profiles are public it found the links (mobile LinkedIn search is limited so you need to use the Desktop version)

Similar experience with Instagram. With Facebook I can at least use the search to an extent (if page is public) but Instagram story links have no traceability.

I’ve seen these ideas pitched on Hacker News but is there any examples of HN users:

1. Starting a business that generally pays minimum wage and attempting to pay their employees more

2. Buying property and renting it out at below market rates

3. Supporting, training or helping people who are unemployed.

4. Going to work as teachers in underserved school districts.

5. Offering university level education for free

6. Buying USA made only

Hasn’t this traditionally been the American way? People going out and trying to experiment and build the things they wish to see in the world? I think everyone wants the things you mention but for some reason we are unable to execute on them and a convenient scape goat is that the government should solve it or that “the other party” is getting in the way. Where is the “You must be the change you seek” crowd these days?

Wouldn’t trying to make a small change in your community have more impact than all the comments posted in this thread?

I’ve been developing in WebGL for the last year on a Mac and can’t help but notice that Firefox and Chrome have much better performance (fps) than Safari. I would’ve thought Safari on Mac hardware would work best.

Does anyone know where these performance differences stem from?

In Cartesian coordinates we use x,y notation so lng,lat seems like the more familiar convention for math students.

Could someone please put a number on “vast majority”? I keep hearing this adage but a majority is 51% and there’s a big range between 51 and 100% that a word like “vast” doesn’t precisely capture..
