We’re all just swimming as the AI wave comes crashing on every developer out there - we can keep swimming, dive or surf. Picking a strategy is necessary but it would probably be good to be able to do all of the above.

From my experience hardware acceleration has been quite lacking on Ubuntu (especially noticeable when watching YouTube).

How is it surprising that they're the ones getting raises? Clearly they're willing to risk more than you are for the reward.

Only getting caught cheating guarantees loss.

Playing fair does not guarantee winning.

Yes absolutely a Pi is likely plenty assuming it's fairly light load. That said, if you prefer x86 you may have better mileage using an older thinclient or perhaps even something like the ODroid H3 (or frankly any old laptop).

Just be sure to have a decent backup system in place as consumer grade equipment like the above may fail rather abruptly with little route to recovery.

Edit: you may want to check out Jupiter Broadcasting's Self-Hosted podcast. The show is very much geared towards DIY enthusiasts/small businesses.

On X when in a Zoom call, if I drag any window around the whole DE starts tearing wildly to the point of it being very distracting. On Wayland, it's smooth as butter (or Windows or MacOS for that matter).

This is just one very easy to replicate example. There are a bunch of other seemingly simple tasks that lead to some rather hideous tearing in X.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Within an hour of reading the mail we began moving our infrastructure to Cloudflare Pages.

Crying shame because I would have been willing to pay Netlify 20-30e per month. But going from 0 to 120e+ per month is just too steep to justify given the alternatives available.

Getting to that is the aspiration, don't get me wrong. At present however I'm in year 3 of bootstrapping a consulting/product startup - so every quarter is still somewhat existential.

The sooner we're reliably profitable, the sooner I can escape the hamster wheel.

It's a reasonable question, but frequently it's quite a complex answer. Given you are likely just one of many applicants I think it may just accelerate most employers turning you down.

If seeing the codebase is an important part of your decision (ie not just knowing what stack/libraries are in use) you may wish to apply for an open source oriented company.

As someone who regularly works 10-12 hours a day, shifting the end of the work day a further 1.5hrs sounds like a special kind of hell.

Promising once it has a volume of users. At first though, I imagine it would attract relatively new podcasts that don't yet have established communities.

That said, until it reaches some critical mass which adds value to creators in terms of discovery and community, asking small time creators to fork out 360USD per year is quite a big ask.
