That was almost 10 years ago. Seems like it was just yesterday.

The steam engine replaced a lot of jobs. Tractors replaced a lot of jobs. Calculators replaced a lot of jobs. Computer used to be a job description before it was a personal device. There will be new jobs.

Well you can do whatever you want but those are hardly equivalent to destroying a camera.

unclad5968 — Thu, 06 Aug 2026 22:33:27 +0000

I'm not sure that it's certainly unlawful to defend yourself against gang violence, but I'm not a Mexican lawyer. It's such an odd thing to say that people defending their homes are now a gang because they fight back against the cartel.

unclad5968 — Fri, 31 Jul 2026 21:38:18 +0000

I'm mostly ignorant to anything regarding the safety of LLMs. What makes an open-weight LLM dangerous?

> developers who get mad that you don’t give away all of your hard work for free

> encourage and support open source software

These two statements are not about the same group of people. It's reasonably safe to assume all people that get mad about proprietary software support OSS, but not all supporters of OSS get mad when people sell their software.

Everything I do I license as public domain. I would also encourage OP to sell his software if he'd like to make money from it, albeit maybe some different software.

New comment by unclad5968 in "DIY Home Solar System for under $5000 (2025)"

unclad5968 — Mon, 27 Jul 2026 16:08:01 +0000

It sounds reasonable to me. I priced out a DIY setup when I bought my house a few months ago, and I came up with ~$6000. I priced new panels and what I would consider more reliable batteries which accounts for the cost difference.

New comment by unclad5968 in "Learn OpenGL, extensive tutorial resource for learning Modern OpenGL"

unclad5968 — Thu, 23 Jul 2026 21:25:22 +0000

Webgpu is the worst of both worlds. Significantly more complicated than opengl yet not capable of many "essential" modern techniques like bindless resources.

If you must use a modern api to learn for whatever reason, go with vulkan and use dynamic rendering and buffer device addressing.

Having grown up in a town of about 5000 people and 3 bars, yes this is what people did for the most part. I'm sure it's different depending on where you're at. Sometimes a DD actually will drive everyone especially since most people are less than 10 minutes away.

New comment by unclad5968 in "Microsoft Fire IdTech Team at Id Software"

unclad5968 — Tue, 07 Jul 2026 17:11:41 +0000

I didn't try that hard but I did not have much success. I spent some time trying to vibe code a forward clustered renderer in vulkan and I couldn't manage to get anything I was too happy with. Mostly just regurgitation of a few different tutorials. It's possible I'm just too dumb to use AI and it was also 18 months ago, so things have progressed on the LLM front.

New comment by unclad5968 in "Zig → Rust porting guide"

unclad5968 — Tue, 05 May 2026 01:42:44 +0000

I don't think Zig is different enough from rust or any other systems language for it to matter. If you can write rust you can write Zig.
