Granola terrifies me. It’s highly capable at summarisation, and seems to be free. What’s the catch? Generally speaking, if something is free then my attention or my data tends to be the product – and when that thing runs in the background on my Mac, has access to my microphone, my calendar data and my private meeting notes, that is potentially very scary indeed.

Once trained and fine tuned, can the model be uploaded or transferred to a lower spec server somewhere (eg a cheap cloud server) to use as an on-demand service, or does inference carry the same fairly beefy hardware requirements?

The physical world has age checks when kids attempt to enter a premises with dangerous or unsuitable content - eg bars, casinos, strip joints. These seem largely accepted as a good thing. Why do so many seem to feel that the same protections are so outrageous when applied in the virtual world? Honest question, I can see both sides.

I mean the current US president literally threatened to increase EU trade tariffs if the EU tries to get the big tech companies to pay their fair share of tax here. You can’t have it both ways.

I remember that my ZX Spectrum 48k came with a big orange book of BASIC programs to type in.

One of which was some sort of mystical “reflect on the runes” program that printed ancient symbols to contemplate. It had a written comment in the docs that it would self destruct after three attempts “to guard against frivolous use”. And, sure enough, if you typed it in without understanding it - there was the BASIC command that soft reset your computer on the third iteration! I can’t remember that command now - RANDOMIZE USR 0 perhaps? Happy days.

Oh sorry - it’s actually quite boring it was called Radbench! I had this idea you could load workbench from a TSR RAM disk rather than endlessly swapping floppy disks whenever you wanted to run a command.

Well that’s just snarky and not very nice. The guy has 30 years experience as a dev according to a sibling comment so it’s not as though it’s some vibe coded junk. Why do you believe a good dev can’t use AI to assist in writing great code?
