I think it's not unreasonable to see this as a first, positive, step.

It's certainly giving them some benefit of the doubt, but it doesn't seem unreasonable that, say, the EU server and the US backup will in some time be an EU server and an EU backup.

I think there's more solutions to that, no? The poor school might make more poor students, but statistically it probably also has some good ones too. So maybe given a basket of roughly equal candidates to a position, one can treat those with a diverse background as having a benefit, rather than looking at their school background and assuming they're unqualified or setting them aside.

If your candidates don't meet the bar then fine, but i'm not convinced that's the default case in life.

Though flock says this deployment was 'special' the description of it sounds normal to me? "...cameras configured so that they capture only the backs of vehicles..." "...older hardware and placement of cameras higher and further from vehicles than the company typically recommends." 'Typically' is doing some heavy lifting there, either the deployment was recommended or it wasn't.

Given flock sold and installed it i'd lean on they were comfortable with 7/10 false positives until the story broke out. For a company implementing a surveillance panopticon I imagine some data is better than none for them. Less so for the false positives and their families though.

I can find agreement with a lot of this post (and probably misunderstand just as much), but it's striking to me that it seems to overlook or avoid the obvious moral/ethical option: Pushing AI towards Personal Computing.

It seems clear to me that if these models are to have any benefit for humanity then they must be made directly available to as many humans as possible. Right now that cost and effort is astronomical, but general computing also went through a mainframe/shared model before becoming personalized.

I believe The Personal Computer was and still is a gift to humanity; for those with an interest in gathering its yield. And now we have an interface with it that can attempt to introspect its' program and speaks human tongue! Imagine what could have been done with this at the time...

But if that approach clutches too many pearls to stomach (and I agree it's not all roses) then I'd submit that anyone who champions less is seeking to become our master.

These are both very nice projects! Ive unfortunately learned too late with hister that the browser bookmark ingestion expects the binary to be local, instead of on a server/vm. But other than that i'm glad these two projects seem like they complement each other.

I believe that local models are a necessary extension of the personal computer and I imagine that one could have had similar criticisms of early personal computers.

Do they still not let you change the default model folder? You had to go through this whole song and dance to manually register a model via a pointless dockerfile wannabe that then seemed to copy the original model into their hash storage (again, unable to change where that storage lived).

At the time I dropped it for LMStudio, which to be fair was not fully open source either, but at least exposed the model folder and integrated with HF rather than a proprietary model garden for no good reason.
