Maybe Borland Turbo C? I also think Visual Basic for DOS had a text-mode UI editor.

New comment by vekatimest in "Show HN: Ultrahot.tv a video platform like YouTube I created"

vekatimest — Tue, 08 Apr 2025 22:34:50 +0000

In widescreen, the UI is unusable and gets very small on a video page for some reason. The overall design is genuinely overwhelming and feels like a bunch of components pasted in without any thought put into layout or scale.

It's a thin ChatGPT wrapper with AI-generated testimonial videos.

Is the plan to monetize this with paid 'gear' upgrades & 'claiming'? Feels a lot like an NFT project from 3 years ago.

New comment by vekatimest in "Readable File Sharing"

vekatimest — Sun, 23 Mar 2025 21:53:43 +0000

Using a subdomain as a file URL feels vaguely wrong and I don't think it's very clear to the recipient what they're actually clicking on, but the UX is at least smooth. I don't think /file/[keyword] would be that bad.

Maybe avoid using AI art with mangled hands and a visually noisy generated logo for your branding.

I think this originates from Isaacson's biography and was about the iPod?

I also don't understand having a search interface not front-and-center and under the weird sub-brand of "SepiaSearch".

ArchiveBox works decently with Javascript and uses a headless browser, can be deployed with Docker

Krita still doesn't have a usable text tool or a way to change an image's color space.

To be replaced with a system providing a standardized method to give law enforcement easier "secure access" to your redacted personal information.

By 'note' I guess they mean rich text editor.

vekatimest — Sat, 15 Mar 2025 15:45:52 +0000

This just looks like a ChatGPT wrapper with a button that prompts it to explain a sentence in English. I don't see how this is better than an intentionally designed language-learning course, or just practicing a language by talking to any other language model. This does no actual teaching.

New comment by vekatimest in "YouTube, when the walls fell [video]"

vekatimest — Sun, 09 Mar 2025 04:00:26 +0000

Title's a Star Trek reference, and the video is a retrospective on YouTube, the state of algorithmic feeds, and its alternatives. It's largely an endorsement of Floatplane and the creator talks about moving to that platform.

I loved i.reddit, and really miss sites that were actually optimized for performance and low-end devices. It being removed kind of felt like a final nail in the coffin for that whole era. I think HTML Gmail was killed around that time too.
