So, I love this little game. I've been wanting to remake Scorched Earth for years, just for fun.
Decided to experiment with this repo today, adding multi player, islands that can sink the ships (that the ships cant shoot through), and a few other things to the game. Anyone who wants to join, ill be in here in a multi player room that supports up to 10 people at a time: https://ndroo.github.io/pirates/?join=BP4Q
I also added controls for mobile users, because that was the first issue I ran into. Probably buggy, maybe not secure...but i had some fun with a friend a few moments ago and it wasn't awful.
Thanks for sharing this OP!

Probably a bit but here’s the thing: if charging fast is, well….faster…then people care less if they loose a little extra battery because getting it back is less inconvenient.
There’s a graph i imagine here where slow charging, you want to retain all capacity. Faster it gets, you tolerate more battery loss.

So we have had quiet the journey here.
So 70 days ago (aka 73 turns ago) I posted on HN sharing our FreeCiv deployment (https://github.com/ndroo/freeciv.andrewmcgrath.info). FreeCiv is a great game, the clients is very buggy however. I'm using the GTK4 version, but a few others have opted for the QT variant. At some point, we might turn our focus to contributing to improving the client based on our experiences playing the game.
We've since added a lot of little fun features:
- The editor: you can write to the newspaper Editor and they /might/ publish what you write, quote you, or decide you're full of it and write an opinion piece slamming your reputation. The editor will also reach out to a few players, each turn, and ask for their input on current game matters.
- The Intelligence Dashboard. People were forgetting what they were up to, so we added a dashboard showing the timeline of what happens per turn for your player.
- beta the online map viewer: I wanted a way to view the map without loading the client, so we started working on a beta map viewer that is HTML based.
- The Chronicle (The newspaper) has also grown a bit. Maybe too much? We'll see. The crossword is fun.
Some other 'fun' things that happened: my brother in law stopped speaking to me because of in game banter that was taken way too seriously. My friends invaded my wifes territory, and well, she didn't like that either.
I'm currently in the lead, but theres still a long way to go from 475BC.

Came here to say the same. I don't even know what this product is anymore. The website makes it sound like its about music but there is no music? I'm lost.
The last time I paid for LastFM was some time in 2009...but the home page just isn't clearly telling me what the service offers.

A good Tl;dr; is never a bad thing in a world where everyone is being pulled in different directions for attention. I agree with you for the most part, but after reading the post, it's a mess and could do with a clear summary at the top...hell, even an index of relevant sections and sub-headings.

So unfortunately this is it for me too. I liked Cursor as a tool, but when i switched to Claude I realized i was getting WAY better value for money. I spent $1800 the month before, i spent $200 the next.
I'm now switching between Claude and Codex for less than 1/4 of what I was spending in December.

That's OK...Everyone gets an email saying the next turn is ready, and the 23 hour window begins. Picking 23 hour turns was intentional so that theres never the expectation that turns would end at the same time as to not bias favour towards any particular player over the course of the game.

You can read the code, but my suggestion on how to do this is to just ingest the save game files. They're super easy to work with, especially now we have the magic of LLMs.
In my case i'm creating various json files that describe game state, players, diplomacy, attendance, etc. Then i just throw that at the LLM and give it the goal of writing a newspaper article about where the game is at. The json files are incremental, so i'm not reading all the past versions on every turn. At the end of the current turn it just appends the current turn data to the json file, and then does the generation. These files are also what power the frontend UI, so it's all super lightweight and fast.
To make the graphs, you need to know state at the end of the current turn as the save files don't retain any history. So i store the most recent save file from each turn in order to achieve this.
It's been a journey of reverse engineering this game, but that's kind of the joy of it all.

This was a friends suggestion after I initially proposed something that exposed a bit too much detail. I wanted to show the diplomacy states and unit/city additions per player as a highlight on the home page, but we instead kept the raw files that generated those UI elements and fed them into OpenAI with the prompt and the Gazette was born.
It's a bit verbose honestly (see https://freeciv.andrewmcgrath.info), I welcome pull requests with improved prompting!
