Lala was great, you could upload your own MP3s and stream them or you could purchase them directly (for download or streaming as a "web song"). If you were a registered member, you could listen to any album/song once at no cost (not just on their platform, embedded in web sites too).

When I was in high school, a bunch of AP students cheated off the valedictorian our senior year...when it was exposed, they hushed everything up rather than allowing a scandal that would ruin the school's and the students' reputations (some of which were bound for Ivy League schools in a few months' time).

Sometimes, the entire community will protect its cheaters.

No, a nail technician is a job that sustains many immigrant communities. They may be faceless to you but they're real people getting pushed out of jobs. This "automation device" isn't anything like a smartphone.

I taught myself how to flatpick on guitar. Three years later, I found out that I held the plectrum incorrectly. Though I've learned the proper way (and will switch to it in order to tremolo a la Dick Dale), twenty-five years later I still can't shake it.

I'm a big fan of King and as such implore you to recommend specific works: nobody should read 'Rose Madder' on accident (or even as punishment, I don't care the transgression).

Have you read Robert Jordan's 'Conan' books? I just reread them (after finally getting around to reading Sanderson's final two books of Jordan's 'Wheel of Time' series) and they're more fun than I'd remembered!

I had a friend in undergrad that was moving a pretty significant number of modded (original) XBoxes at a pretty significant markup...but it turned out that he also offered a particular service that was largely driving sales: a larger hard drive filled with ripped DVDs from the 'Red Light District' adult film studio.

Your response was dismissive of the possibility that families could throw a family member into a nursing home to raid their savings, etc. I'm telling you that this happens and providing a real-world example from my own life, just like you did.

The vast majority of people do NOT have loving, decent families. You are lucky to have that world view but you should consider the possibility that it is quite flawed.

My grandmother was in good health but my mother didn't want to assist her (Medicare-provided) caretaker anymore and wanted her assets. She and my stepfather manufactured a scenario in which she took a fall, then stuck her in a nursing home and she died within a year. My mother knew the rules and got what she wanted without any repercussions (beyond losing contact with her only son).

I don't know people who have done this but I know people that are impacted by people that have (e.g. small towns along the Hudson river being inundated by people fleeing NYC).
