is it? from where I stand, hn seems to be one of the exceptionally few remaining places where the mods don't take sides so the obnoxious minority doesn't get to win arguments by silencing everyone else like they do everywhere else.

oh, I've no doubt the US government and giga corporations can get zero data retention without ten pages of fine print. the rest of us can't.

with open weight models, you have three other options
A) use a provider that pinky-swears not to store your data. they obviously don't give a fuck about 'distillation attacks', so they have little motivation to voluntarily monitor and store your queries. reasonably high likelihood of privacy.
B) rent the hardware and run the model yourself. very high likelihood of privacy.
C) buy the hardware and run the model yourself. absolute certainty of privacy.

neither ClosedAI nor Misanthropic will let you use their models without them watching and storing the exchanges indefinitely. no sane company dealing with PII and/or trade secrets allows its employees to use those.

have you read it?
>I’ve been thinking constantly about the common and casual phrase I’ve heard so often, “AI is just a tool - it matters how you use it.” This has been the rallying cry of tech-loving academics who no longer do their own research, tech bros who salivate over generative images of criminal depictions of people without their consent, and business-minded folks who actually don’t care about AI but see this as an opportunity to rake in more and more money for themselves.
that opening paragraph alone immediately identifies the article as yet another "AI is bad and you should feel bad for using it" kvetch and shame piece from yet another militant slackactivist. in 2026.07, it's about as fresh as an article condemning satanic rock music or violent video games.
