Well, nobody's arguing about RPi prices here. I'm just advocating for using the right tool for the job. Lots of people claim that Raspberry Pis have been rendered obsolete by cheap N100 mini PCs but they simply lack the understanding of what RPi actually is and what are its optimal use cases. Hosting a home server on a 16GB Raspberry Pi is mental illness territory and that's where an x86 mini PC is going to make way more sense. Same with retro gaming (unless you really need Composite out). RPis shine when you need compact size, low power and heat with great selection of hardware accessories like cameras and other sensors but also want to run full Linux or need that extra performance that a micro controller just doesn't have.
Edit: Putting a device with permanently attached battery inside of a wall or even on a mount, always plugged in gives me the heebie-jeebies.

But that's way bigger and hotter than a RPi4 with an official Touch Display 2. It's technically possible but sounds silly and impractical.

True but that Raspberry Pi can be both the server and the interface if desired. It's also the easiest way to do all of this with RPis great software support and official plug and play accessories like RPi Touch Display 2. RPi is also going to be way more responsive rendering a complex Home Assistant dashboard.

Can a N100-class minipc” be installed inside of a wall with a touchscreen and serve as a PoE powered Home Assistant interface? Can it be used to build a portable battery powered smartphone like PC (Compute Module 5)?
Raspberry Pi’s biggest strength is its form factor and low power draw.

I don't know much about older models but on 4 and 5 they chose to use a weird power standard to reduce cost. Just buy the official charger. They're not expensive.

Official power supply is sold separately. Pis work fine with unofficial USB-PD power supplies but will limit maximum current for USB devices. I have two Pi 5's and one 4 and they all are perfectly stable when powered with an old Lenovo laptop charger.

If you're looking for a search engine recommendation then I'll go againt all the bots and paid shills in this thread and say: Kagi sucks.
Kagi search results are very mediocre. Comparable to what DDG, Startpage and others provide for free.
Even though their search results are quite unimpressive the subscription is quite expensive and comes with extra fluff like AI tools that needlessly inflate the price.
Kagi sends a small part of their profits to russia by paying for yandex index.
They provide support via Discord thus it's safe to say that they endorse Discord even after recent controversies.
You're IT people, right? Take matters into your own hands and self host a SearXNG instance. Share it with family and friends to make yourself and everyone else harder to track and profile. Mooch off Google's infrastructure and don't give them anything in return. Fuck them.
Edit: Seconds after submitting already downvoted without any reply. Tell me Kagi is not running bots on HN.

Greed and lust for power. Judging by how most people interact with the internet these days I'm afraid Google will be fine. This is the new normal. Most people are so painfully dumb they delegate most of their thinking to ChatGPT anyway.

I loved windows 8.1. It was fast, lightweight, looked clean and modern. That weird start menu wasn't really a problem for me. Too bad it got dropped by hardware manufacturers like a hot potato as soon as the objectively inferior Windows 10 came out. But maybe that's good because it made me switch to Linux full time and I couldn't be happier with it.

That's nuts. Especially the substance abuse part. That shit definitely can be dangerous if not treated with respect.
I'm taking baby doses of methylphenidate, keeping a strict diet (no sugar, coffee, white bread or ultra processed junk) and exercising regularly. I'm also skipping meds on weekends to give my brain some time to rest. But yeah, I know that eventually I'll have to start taking higher doses and that scares me a bit. Hopefully I'll be able to achieve my goals before that.
