Couple questions:
1) Do we think this is actually how the FBI found this kid or is this simply what they're saying in order to keep some other tool hidden?
2) Is there a way to block or manually change the GDID from being revealed. If it's the browser leaking it, do all browsers leak it?

And it doesn't have to be something super difficult. I realized after my divorce a decade ago that due to all the hours I had spent working I was a bit of a shit dad and didn't really have a great relationship with my kids.
One of the best things I did was started a "family game night" every week. Bought a handful of board games and each Saturday we'd sit down with pizza and games. No cellphones at the table. It was a huge success for us. It allowed us to learn new things together and it helped build a foundation for us all to grow from. Even now with all but one of my kids grown, when we get together games are brought out and we have a blast. Nowadays I'm teaching my grandson to play some simple ones and can't wait for him to join in.

I want an API to tap into time itself. Eventually, I'd want to be able to travel through it, but in the beta I'd settle for just the ability to pause it whenever I like. :)

You're right, it's situations like that which brought up this idea. Some way to reliably document a statement or idea and the date just seems like a useful service.
The notarization would be a bit difficult since each state has their own rules and laws. Additionally, I think they all have a residency requirements, at least the two states I've been a notary in did.

But can't the time and dates can be changed those.
As for recording phone calls, the laws vary from state to state. The states I have experience with only require one person on the conversation to be aware that it's being recorded.

A couple weeks ago I had an idea for a new service, but I'm not sure it's something others would find useful or if it would be accepted as an authority.
Basically, what I'm thinking is a service where people could do things like store notes, pictures, recordings, etc. and each item would be stored in such a way so that it could not be later altered (was thinking MySQL archive tables).
For example, the idea came to mind when my wife moved out a few weeks ago. Every time we have a conversation I feel like I need to document it, e.g. "Just spoke with X and stated that abc" and have that stored on a server of a non-biased company somewhere so that if the situation gets to the point of legal counsel being brought in I could put together a sort of log or journal of what's been said and when.
If this was something that could be useful, I could build out mobile apps that could take recordings and submit those or even automatically forward text messages from selected individuals. I would, of course, want something like triple redundancy on the databases to ensure nothing is lost.
But, like I said earlier, I'm not sure such a service would be helpful to others or if lawyers/courts would even consider the information worthwhile or admissible.
What say ye, all wise HN community? :)

Audiobook:
I just finished Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I highly recommend it if you're into fantasy type novels. It has a unique magic system and is very well written. I've been off and on with War and Peace for a while. Kind of dry so far.
Kindle:
The Law by Frederic Bastiat, extremely good book describing the fundamental purpose of law and government.
Dead Tree:
Essence of Discrete Mathematics by Neville Dean, seems to be pretty good book, just haven't devoted enough time to reading it.

> As for legal documents, those are all based on the standard work week as well, so that argument falls as well.
No, it doesn't. Quite a few legal documents are signed on Saturdays and then overnighted back so that the sender can have it back by Monday.

What do you recommend?"

The best piece of advice I can give is to stay away from McDojo type places. You know the ones. Usually franchises, instructor's with questionable lineage, 'clubs' that will take you from nothing to black belt for a set fee, etc. One in particular has added several new belts in my lifetime just to keep people longer. Some teach their own version of an art, so what you learn won't transfer if you ever move.
Some forums were already suggested. If you're interested in learning about traditional martial arts I highly recommend http://www.karate-budo.com/. It's a small forum and they don't approve everyone (or, they didn't when I joined; not sure now). But the people there are serious about their martial arts.
Others have mentioned researching the schools. I'd recommend researching the Sensei. Find out who he trained under and research that person as well.
My $.02 worth.

I have four daughters ages 4 to 14 and the one thing, without a doubt, that kids did for me was that they help me to slow down and appreciate the little things in life. If it wasn't for a my daughters (and my wife, to a lesser extent) I'd probably do nothing but work and sleep. But they keep me grounded in the rest of the world. And something as simple as a few minutes watching a show or playing a game together brings me more joy than it ever did before I had them.
As for you questions; yeah, it'll can change your priorities, inspire you to do more or do different. And, as you can see in the rest of the comments, having a baby instantly requires everyone to give all the advice they wished someone had given them.
My advice, ignore 99.9% of what everyone tells you. Doing that is what kept my wife and I sane.
