dumping money into Gemma and shorting new data center buildouts is a level of Corporate Vision that ends up in an HBS case study

Makes me wonder about the partnership with apple to use gemini. safe to assume apple has a preference for on-device, and the best open model (for consumer hardware at least) is a google property with an apache 2 license. Interesting dynamic and seemingly a bright spot in the market

yes, the economics, and ease of use, of google/apple cloud storage is unmatched
and yes, most people willing to endeavor into the area are hobbyist, with all that entails
however, reading even one story of someone losing access to their cloud photos for xyz reason, is enough to decide that you ought to have some mechanism in place to ensure ownership of your data

That “smart” vs “dumb” distinction doesn’t apply here though. What is discussed has nothing to do with the ability to physically land a bomb in a precise location, that problem seems to be solved reasonably well already. “Smart” in this case has more to do with using ML/LLM to select a target.

This is much better positioned for longevity than google’s URL shortener, I’m not trying to make that argument.
My point is that 10-15 years ago, when Google’s URL shortener was being adopted for all these (inappropriate) uses, its use was supported by a public opinion of Google’s ‘inevitability’. For Perma, CF serves a similar function.

While Perma is solution specifically for this problem, and a good one at that - citing the might of the backing company is a bit ironic here

I'm not sure the political currents present in America today indicate that states won't eagerly trample the right's of their citizens. Especially considering the voting restrictions and minoritarian rule pet projects of the right.
America is also rife with examples of the federal government intervening to protect citizens from their states — Brown v Board, or most extremely the Civil War.
"People need to vote" is insufficient for regressions on issues that affect people's livelihoods. For example, Texas has a larger democrat-voting population than many blue states, "just voting" won't do anything to improve their livelyhood in the foreseeable future.

> Gay marriage, on the other hand, has near zero historical precedence outside of a few cases with Roman emperors and stuff like that.
Unsure if you're presenting that as the human history that exists "in Thomas's mind" or actual history
