I spun up an MCP server for a personal finance app I've been working on. OAuth with personal tokens and all the tools I added- guess how long it took me? Like 2 hours maybe. Some people find it useful, including me, and some don't. That's okay!

That said, this is a sad situation. If I’m reading this right, essentially digital ocean has just stopped paying the main contributor to css tricks for no clear reason.

Locked up my entire M1 Macbook Pro, held power button and I was back into chrome in <20s but I did kinda go "why did I just do that?"

The vast majority of devs pre-ai clocked in, wrote mediocre or even bad code, and clocked out. Those same people at least have a coding buddy with a bar of quality set at least as high as what they'd normally write, and simple prompts of "any security considerations I'm missing?" can take it to the next level.

If you work on a team of devs who truly care about code quality, you should thank the people in charge of hiring. Odds are they culled hundreds of mediocre applicants to get to the people you work with.

By the way, I'm not bashing on those that clock in, do the bare minimum, and clock out. Even those devs generally produce more value from their labor than what the company compensates them for, so it's still a money printing machine for execs.

Setting up an MCP connector took like 10 minutes for me, and it provides a nice little ui in Claude/chatgpt to make it easier for non-technical users to set up. I think of MCPs as a layer over APIs that makes things easier to interact with, similar to a frontend of a site.

Theoretically, no site needs a frontend. Yet they all do.

The other day I was heading to Home Depot to buy some gardening stuff and I was asking some some questions around what I could plant at this time and still harvest before winter.

It answers me, then brings up how my home improvement budget is nearing its limit for the month. I then ask it how I’m doing on my wider retirement plan and it mentions I’m a few thousand dollars ahead of schedule for the plan. So I decided it’s okay to go over budget on that category this month.

This type of emergent behavior of agents you work with having more context about you, it’s very useful in ways I didn’t expect.

That's odd because I could have sworn the United Nations, The International Association of Genocide Scholars, B'Tselem, Physicians for Human Rights Israel, and Human Rights Watch had all labeled Israel's actions against Palestinians as genocide.

America's evidence against that? Israel says so.

Since when does defence require killing innocent women and children indiscriminately? At what point does that sort of defence reach a level of inhumanity that you're willing to concede that it's genocidal?

As a Jewish man following true Jewish morals, I will stand by the statements of these international bodies that find Israel and its leaders guilty of committing genocide. Never again cannot mean only for jews; it can only be morally just when applied to everyone.

Oh no! An international body is taking action against some of the worst criminals on the planet? I'm glad the U.S. is taking actions to prevent those people from doing their job. America is doing great!

Fully agreed. It's also just a time saver. People are lazy, and I don't mean that in a bad way, just that people don't really want to sit there and explain to an agent exactly what they want software to function like. In fact, most people don't even actually know what they want software to function like.

It doesn't just stop at humans either. When I recently started creating my smart budgeting app, Claude pointed me to use Clerk for auth. So not even the AI wants to build everything from scratch.

That's a good point, and of course there are downstream affects of this, but I wonder if that's a bad thing. We're not talking about reduction in ability to access say mortgage debt or something of that nature, we're talking credit card debt. Making it possible for a person to be in $10k, $20k, $40k+ in extremely high interest credit card debt doesn't seem like a positive for our economy overall to me. It really just masks the root of the problem, which is that people are working paycheck to paycheck and can't afford the occasional emergency.
