Never a popular topic on HN, but I’ve been through some appalling diversity training as a white man that seems a-ok in the broader culture. I’ve left one high paying prominent fintech job over such nonsense.
Sadly, I feel this is the result - if we’re not going to be colorblind as a rule everyone is going to “wise up” (and I use the phrase loosely) and start attacking everyone else.

They’re not bleeding or have obvious trauma?
I’m not defending the hospital in TFA, per se, but my wife recently had an ER visit on a miscarriage. She was immediately admitted and tended to be a doctor for the fact that she was hemorrhaging.
During the course of our 12 hours I came and went from her room through the waiting room and to my vehicle. Saw folks waiting hours and hours. For all I know they had a faulty pump.
When it came time for dismissal, we waited hours and hours. The attending staff were handing a GSW and a head trauma on a child. While I didn’t go full-Karen I had to drop the “my wife suffered a miscarriage and is having a mental breakdown, are we going to be banned from your hostile system if we just leave?” to receive final clearance to leave.
Triage is just… complicated. You can’t plan and staff accurately for random tragedy.

I used to roll BJJ with a 50-ish year old man. As a teenager he suffered a debilitating car crash and hip replacement at the time, resulting in his having a cane until his second replacement circa 2020. This allowed him to walk cane free and practice marital arts.
The technology is there for hip replacements, it would seem.

Pleasantries and social oddities are just part of being a human after all.
What bothers me is the folks that ask-to-ask then go ghost for 15 minutes or more. You’ve captured my attention, please capitalize on it! If you’ve broken my concentration and walked away, _that_ is rude.

Meanwhile in America I am allowed to self-remove asbestos as a homeowner no verifications required. Whereas a commercial builder is required to have certifications.
Another “fun fact,” when the asbestos ban went into place builders were still allowed to use any remaining stock they held in their warehouses. No new product could be purchased. So homes could still be built years later with a now banned substance.
Fascinating bit of law there.

What style of multifamily are you referring to here? Every townhome and apartment style I’ve ever lived in has discrete electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.
I’ve only rarely seen condo styles with shared systems and those typically come with unappealing expensive management fees, insurance, and shared expense to the tune 500+ per month on top of the price for the unit itself. My father used to mantain the infrastructure for such a development and those were prices circa 2000 or so.

Both parents previously had a guest room but at some point decided to eliminate them in favor of storage for their things, their hobbies, etc.
Then wonder why we are hesitant to spend the money on boarding dogs, driving 5+ hours and renting a hotel. Asking us to commit to $500+ dollars for weekend casual visits is unrealistic and absurd for wealthy retirees.
To be clear they not only have no guest room they have no where for guests to stay.
