I became an engineering manager when my daughter was 2. Way back in the old days before LLMs so I had to both code and manage. Completely burnt me out. I never fully got back into traditional tech career after I was laid off in '23.

I did start two businesses: One brick and mortar and one app. The brick and mortar has the biggest drain on family time since with the app I can grind at night and only miss out on sleep.

I've been fired (super early in my career I was a waiter) and laid off twice (Great recession and the covid overspend). If you think for even a second that an organization will put you before profits you have wasted that one second.

The exact opposite has happened for me. I used to review every pr, give read only access to db. Now with codex 5.6 sol high I let it rip. I do sometimes quickly scan the pr but mostly I've been regulated to a manual tester. Run the feature, check the DB, verify the UI. Build unit and E2E around everything. Mind you I am not working with production data yet.

My stack for this project is React Native and Supabase which I've got a good amount of experience using.

Which LLM are you using?

In my experience a legacy codebase is where LLM shines. What would take days to grok is understood and explained almost immediately. There was a bit of job security with being the one whose worked with IIFEs to manage state.

You must know the codebase well if the LLM is slowing you down.

When I was younger (50ish now) I could juggle full time work with side projects but I just can't now, especially with family demands. Full time work is pretty much burning me out. I'm close to leaving and starting a mobile food cart.

When I do get out I'll definitely miss the salary. I'll miss lunch with the other devs. Miss the walks with other devs around the building. Theres something special about folks in engineering. When I'm serving up lunch and overhear some folks talking SDLC I'll smile and reminisce. But its not for me any more. I'm the gray hat now and have no desire to write code for someone elses fortune. Good luck getting out!

I'm surprised this still needs to be said. I'm convinced that posts like these are from people that let the LLM run wild. Small chunk PRs is the key whether its a human or an LLM

Why'd you let him run wild for two months? What software org would let anyone, even principle do that? Wouldn't the very first thing you'd do is review the guys schema? This reads like all the other snarky posts on HN about how everyone is punching above their pay grade and people who are much more advanced in some space just watch like two trains colliding.

I'll tell you what is productive in the workplace. Communication. That is it. Communicate and lift the guy up, give the guy a running start instead of chilling in the break room snarking with all your snarky co-workers.

Agreed. I never considered myself an "engineer". Honestly just a regular code monkey. Software Engineer was just my job title. Folks higher up the ladder did engineer software. You know what? It sucked. Was always broken, we were always patching, we never saw around corners. But hey - they software engineered it.
