Not if it helps raise awareness and gets companies to notice. Is peanutbutterjelly.co.uk more worthy of a domain ?

How do people who are far sighted use cameras without EVF ? When I have to hold a camera 20 cm in front of me to film I just pretend I'm able to focus on the LCD.

New comment by xuhu in "Once: Cache CLI commands"

xuhu — Fri, 09 Oct 2026 11:54:25 +0000

I wish this worked without prefixing the commands with "once". Especially if I ran a command with verbose output and afterwards decided I wanted to grep something from it. Terminals have the output in their scrollback buffer and maybe it's just a matter of writing an "output" command that lets me run:

    $ cmake ..
$ output | grep "libssl version"

James Hetfield used to do a lot of portraits with lightning, what with the band logo and all: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/james-hetfield-ride-the-...

But recently he seems to prefer fire or stadium audiences in the background.

When the first TV ships with a battery to keep running while unplugged, I'm dusting off my soldering iron and my digital circuits handbook.

Could a smartphone sit between 2 regular laptops to achieve this with 3 USB cables and a hub ?

New comment by xuhu in "FFmpeg 9.0"

xuhu — Tue, 04 Aug 2026 11:23:29 +0000

I still hope a future FFmpeg release will make Intel QSV encoding available on Windows laptops where the manufacturer disabled this capability from the ACPI tables. The only way to use it on these laptops is currently FFmpeg on Linux.

Hey I just came up with this idea, I'm going to feed copyrighted books into my LLM that remembers them verbatim, and then people pay me to ask the LLM for complete copies of a book.

Wait, no, not verbatim. It transforms upper case into lower case and vice versa.

A real estate photographer described the typical job as taking 15 photos of the same living room while moving a softbox around and then merging the layers in Photoshop. No Photoshop would be like no copy pasting permitted while writing code.

For one, audio transcription services that use Whisper will sample the input down to 16Khz mono first.

A comparison made by some Solaris guy comparing a tech magnate to a lawnmower springs to mind.

New comment by xuhu in "A native graphical shell for SSH"

xuhu — Tue, 30 Jun 2026 09:35:58 +0000

Since the half of the app that is running on my local X or Wayland can only display a GUI and doesn't need QtNetwork, QtWebkit, Gtk Webview etc, what lightweight UI toolkit other than html+js do you recommend ?

New comment by xuhu in "A native graphical shell for SSH"

xuhu — Mon, 29 Jun 2026 18:08:55 +0000

Being able to initiate a shell app from a regular remote ssh CLI prompt (like "ApacheConfig myhost.com" or "Editor ~/myrepo") might improve integration with people's existing CLI workflows.

It does need an agent that starts with every X or Wayland session and waits for requests from remote SSH sessions to start an app.

New comment by xuhu in "Replacing Systemd with OpenRC in Debian"

If Unix philosophy is what's keeping systemd from requiring a Microsoft account during install, I'm all for it.

Linux will still be viable when systemd is gone. There will always be a need for open software.

New comment by xuhu in "Turn your site into a place people can bump into each other"

xuhu — Sat, 27 Jun 2026 19:22:32 +0000

I hope sites that just provide a way for people to assemble offline will be the new thing soon.

A photography guide's site that rallies amateurs for walk tours. A planning board for a foreign language practice group. A site with a schedule and registration form for a sports event.

When I read "online social" my head thinks "not-really social".

It's apparently a typo in the article, they probably meant to write `println()`.
