The numbers seem to support the premise that people are leaving text-based social media.

TikTok and YouTube are still growing, while Reddit, Facebook, X and the rest are stagnant or shrinking

X was popular but never had that many users, not even back in the Twitter days. This is a big part of why Twitter was so easily acquired.

I joked a while back that it was faster to vibe-code a white noise generator than to download a white-noise app.

I've since tested that theory on the Google Play Store (iOS has one built in), and it was depressingly true. The slow part was trying to find an app that didn't waste your time with ads.

I don't think we can predict ahead of time whether we'll need a leap second or not

If the question is "why bother syncing time to Earth's orbit around the sun at all", I don't have a good answer for that except at this point, it's tradition.

The brilliant thing about the smear is that it distributes the new second across each second of the day, so that each second differed by 1/86400 seconds, well within the margin of error for NTP.

As far as the computers were concerned, nothing was different.
