Of course, my state used a bunch of bad paint on license plates for a number of years so you could just peel off all the paint removing any contrast from a legit plate and you'd look no different than most people's unreadable plates anyway.

I wonder if you could use the camera to record deepfaked video and in effect bless a lie. Even just filming a TV set might be enough for low grade blackmail and much more complicated methods are available.

The same thing has happened with flash drives already, how do you identify a good flash drive? If you aren't careful you'll end up with a counterfeit but even the genuine articles have shaky reputations and manufacturers change the internal parts all the time.

Last time I checked into these hardware attestation was part of the specification but the ability export them from a vendors platforms is not. In practice that will mean unapproved platforms can be shut out and walled gardens strengthened. Which will happen sooner or later because it can. Apple supposedly zeroes their attestation but that is only a partial mitigation and relies upon the values of a giant corporation not changing its mind for any host of business reasons. And it does nothing to stop other platforms.

To me it sounded like there was a group within Apple that wants to create an emulation layer (and did essentially) but that leadership hates the idea and in its current state it is a compromise that it even exists at all.
