AFAIK this was based on Windows 3.1 standard mode which was small enough to package in a mini.cab.

AFAIK while AMD didn't produce the 387 there was alternatives from for example Cyrix and IIT at the time.

On the other hand, Xorg pulled the original -vga driver quite a long time ago because it was quite a lot of code.

There is a MS13-xxx bulletin that had a bug where full screen DOS was completely broken when /NOEXECUTE=OPTOUT was set in boot.ini

Part of the reason why I pay attention to Marginalia search is the hardware problems it shows. There are now some good papers on SSD based search engines.

Part of the problem is that Google was designed when PCs booted from spinning rust and a fast CPU was a Pentium II.

The fun thing is that 0F 04 (without the F1 prefix) would have been faster than triple fault or reset via the keyboard controller.

The Compaq is IBM PC compatible but uses a different HAL for SMP support. You can see all of them by looking at what NT4 shipped with for example.

DDR5 supports 24Gbit chips, though they are not common yet.
